Miami Sandbar Etiquette: 9 Rules That Will Keep You Safe (and Welcome)
The Nixon Sandbar at Key Biscayne is the social hub of Miami boating — but it has unwritten rules. Here are the 9 that captains wish every guest knew.
The 9 rules
1. Anchor downwind of other boats. Wind shifts, anchors drag — give yourself 30 feet of swing room minimum.
2. No nudity. It's illegal in Florida and the Coast Guard patrols. Tickets are $500+.
3. Music at a reasonable volume. Other people are 10 feet away. Ask a neighbor before turning it up.
4. No glass overboard. Ever. The sandbar is shallow and people are barefoot.
5. No confetti, no glitter. Both are illegal pollutants in Florida waters.
6. Pick up your trash. Every can, every wrapper. Federal offense to dump.
7. Watch for kids and dogs. Boats raft up tight — keep an eye on the swim ladder.
8. Don't anchor on the swim line. Stay 50 ft off the channel and busy boat lanes.
9. Tip your captain. 18–20% standard, in cash, end of day.
